Inhale Calm, Exhale Stress: The Miraculous Power Of Rhythmic Diaphragmatic Breathing
RDB (rhythmic diaphragmatic breathing) is a deep breathing technique that focuses on muscle contraction/release throughout the body depending upon the desired outcome. Studies have shown that RDB can be used not only as an effective form of stress management, but also as a way to decrease pain, expedite healing, and improve focus and concentration. 1 such study completed by (Stromberg et al., 2015) revealed that a breathing practice is an effective non-pharmacological intervention for emotion enhancement. Another completed by (Salyers et al., 2011) stated that A 1-day retreat with breathing exercises was found to relieve the emotional exhaustion and depersonalization induced by job burnout. It has also been shown to improve sleep, reduce anxiety, and even boost the immune system. The aim of RDB is to use the diaphragm to inhale and exhale in a rhythmic controlled manner, while focusing on your body’s energy to promote relaxation and healing, reduce stress, facilitate increased cognitive functions such as memory, focus, clarity and higher level brain processing. It is also used as a method to facilitate the redistribution of both stored and blocked energy that can potentially be harmful to your body, your mind and your spirit.
The idea is to breathe deeply, making sure to fill the lungs with air, and to feel the diaphragm move as the abdomen expands and contracts. From there you use your breath to direct your energy to a specific location while focusing on the intention for the desired outcome. When exhaling, the focus is on slowly contracting the diaphragm, pushing air out of the lungs while focused on area of concern. (yes, it can take a little practice).
After I received training and certification for RDB I began using it with my occupational therapy clients and in my personal life with good results. Through the personal implementation of RBD, I have been able to overcome many obstacles that would have derailed or otherwise stopped me in my tracks prior to learning and practicing Rhythmic Diaphragmatic Breathing.
Just last year I acquired Covid 19 from one of my Occupational Therapy clients which resulted in Severe Anxiety in the the form of PTSD from not being able to breath, constant vomiting and diarrhea which caused dehydration, increased blood pressure, increased heart rate, decreased endurance and muscle atrophy. Yes, I am officially a Long- Hauler with heart damage, lung damage and kidney damage. However, through the use of Rhythmic Diagrammatic Breathing I have been able to regain my ability to breath deep, regulate my heart rate, improve my sleep patterns and calm myself down when feeling overcome. I still become anxious at times when actively treating Covid 19 patients 1 on 1 in their homes however I am better able to calm myself down. RDB helped me to regain control over my life.
As a practicing COTA for the past 35 years I have received advanced certifications as an Occupational Therapy Practitioner, GS, FPS and Hold Certifications in Energy Conservation, Diaphragmatic Breathing, Cognitive Assessments, Dementia Management and Disorders Revolving Around Anxiety, Depression and PTSD. I have been teaching RBD for over 30 years would love the opportunity to teach this technique to you so that you can begin using it immediately in your life and derive the benefits.
